Home History Working On

After a lot of research, I found that Fatman Fabrications had been making an IFS for the 42-47 Pickup for a number of years. For Christmas 2006, I had saved up enough to purchase one. Got the complete kit, including rotors and brakes, ps rack and the MII 5.0L Coils, since I was dropping in a 427. They were lots of help on the phone. This picture shows hanging the frame from the ceiling in the front so the old man didn't have to work on jack stands and on the ground. I had quad by-pass surgery about 6 months before, so I've learned to use my engineering skills instead of my muscles. I also bought the tubular engine mounts from FatMan Fabs.

This shows the crossmember welded at the centerline of the front wheels. I boxed a small part of the frame where it was mounted.

This shows all the boxes the Fatman IFS came in. There were a few more and the crossmember was shipped boxless.

This shows the shock/spring tower mounted on the frame. Front and rear support gussets we also provided in the kit. I ground off the points on the gussets later. [For you purests, I ran out of argon for the welder.]

Here's another view.

Here's a rough install of the rest of the IFS. The springs have to be cut for proper height, and they recommend waiting until all of the weight is on the chassis and removing quarter to half coils until the proper ride height and alignment is obtained. I'll follow their instructions even though I'm a guy.

A shot from the back.

And a shot from the other side. Fatman Fabs provided a spacer pipe to install over the shock to keep it from compressing with the weight in-place. You can just see it over the top of the shock body.

Here's a good shot of the rough-in.

Rotor on!.

Tires on, looks like they will soon roll, and they didn't fall off!
